[Fairview Heights, Il.]-On July 28, 2012 at approx 11:03 a.m. the Fairview Heights Police received a call from a passing motorist who witnessed a man climbing on the roof of the BP gas station located at 6400 N. Illinois, Fairview Heights. The caller gave a description of the man who had gotten out of a car parked on the parking lot of the gas station with 2 males inside waiting for him.
Officers arrived a short time later to find the vehicle and 2 occupants still on scene but the man who had climbed on the roof had fled upon officer’s arrival. A short time later the suspect was located across the street in another store.
During the investigation it was learned the man who had climbed on the roof had tampered with the gas stations electronic communications equipment to attempt to obtain free fuel. It was also learned that the man had an outstanding felony warrant through another Illinois jurisdiction. After learning the details of the attempted theft the man was placed under arrest.
On July 29, 2012, State Attorney, Brendan Kelly’s office issued a two-count warrant charging:
Anteaus D Washington 21 y.o.a Male/Black 2701 S Wall Street Carbondale, IL
With one count of Burglary and one count of Attempted Retail Theft. His bond was set at $10,000 and he is currently being held in the St Clair County Jail.
This case was another outstanding example of police and community partnerships. If it was not for the passing motorist who relayed the information to the police this person may not have been apprehended and a local business would have been victimized.
*All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
