[Fairview Heights, IL.]- On Thursday, March 7, 2019, at approximately 12:23 p.m., the Fairview Heights Police Department responded to a report of a theft in progress at the Hollister store located at St. Clair Square, Fairview Heights, IL.

When the officers arrived, the female theft suspect had exited the store at which time an officer pursued the suspect on foot.  The suspect exited St. Clair Square and moved toward a waiting vehicle in the parking lot. The male driver of the vehicle was standing outside of the vehicle with the door ajar.  This male suspect approached, made physical contact and shoved the officer in an attempt to keep the officer from apprehending the theft suspect. The officer struggled with both suspects, however, both individuals were able to enter the vehicle.  The officer was partially inside of the passenger compartment when the vehicle began to flee, however the officer was able to safely exit the vehicle. Fairview Heights officers attempted to stop the now fleeing vehicle but disengaged due to the erratic driving behavior of the suspects. A radio broadcast alerted other agencies of the incident and the fleeing vehicle.  The vehicle was observed exiting Interstate 64 at Rt. 111. An assisting agency pursued the vehicle westbound on State Street in East St. Louis. The suspect vehicle entered into oncoming traffic when a collision occurred at State St. and 30th Street. Officers requested emergency fire and medical units to the scene. The two suspects were taken into custody, and were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to St Louis University Hospital with serious injuries. Illinois State Police are investigating the traffic accident.

The suspects remain in custody pending charges.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
