Attempted Unlawful Vehicular Invasion/Retail Theft Subsequent

On Saturday, November 11th, 2017 at 6:00pm, the Fairview Heights Police Department responded to the Kohl’s department store, located at 6109 North Illinois Street in Fairview Heights, for a report of a shoplifter. The suspect, Marcus E. Stewart, 45, of Swansea Illinois, was identified and apprehended by Kohl’s security for stealing items while in the store.
Once uniformed officers arrived on scene, the suspect decided to resist arrest and fled the store after a failed Taser deployment. With officers giving chase to the suspect, he attempted to enter an occupied car that was parked nearby. The driver of the car fled the area after the suspect expressed his intent to take the car by attempting to forcefully open the door. As the victim drove away the suspect was dragged a short distance. The suspect fell to the ground and his legs were run over by the car’s rear tires.
After the suspect fell to the ground, he continued to resist officers who were in the foot chase. He was ultimately apprehended and taken to the Fairview Heights Police Department after determining he was uninjured from the incident. No one else was injured during the incident.
A thorough investigation of the incident was conducted and the findings were submitted for review to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office.
On Monday, November 13th, 2017, The St. Clair County State Attorney, Brendan Kelly’s office issued the following charges against Stewart: Attempted Unlawful Vehicular Invasion, Felony Escape from a Peace Officer, Retail Theft-Subsequent Offense, and Resisting a Peace Officer. The felony and misdemeanor charges carry a bond of $100,000.00.
Stewart remains in custody at the St. Clair County Jail awaiting bond.
