Citizens’ Police Academy
The 7th annual Citizens’ Police Academy is now accepting applications! The academy will be held every Thursday for 10 weeks, starting September 13th, 2018 thru November 15th, 2018 from 6-9 p.m., at the Fairview Heights Police Department. Join us!
The FHPD Citizens’ Police Academy is presented to adults, 21 and over, who live or work in Fairview Heights. People from outside the City may be accepted, but the residents and workers of the City will be given preference. This program is a combination of presentations, tours, and hands on experiences intended to give the citizen a better understanding of modern policing in a local context.
Some portions may require physical activity. The Department and staff will work to make reasonable accommodation to individuals with special needs.
Tentative Topics – Introduction • FHPD History • FHPD Tour • Criminal Law • Illinois Vehicle Code • Crime Free Multi Housing • Domestic Violence • School Resource Officer • Drugs & Narcotic Enforcement • Police Canines • Identity Theft • Driving Under the Influence Presentation • Field Sobriety Testing Hands on Experience • Use of Force • Taser Demonstration • Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted • County Jail Tour • Firearms Range Hands on Experience • SWAT Team demonstrations • High risk encounters Hands on experience • Active Shooter Hands on experience • Graduation
Each participant will also complete a 4 hour ride along with a patrol officer, to be scheduled outside of the regular training. There will also be many opportunities for question and answer sessions.
