Medical Issue Blamed for Three Car Crash

On Sunday, December 9, 2018, at just before 9 p.m., officers responded to the area of Route 50 at Route 159 for a multiple-vehicle crash.

When officers arrived to investigate, it was determined a vehicle traveling westbound on Route 50 had crossed into oncoming traffic at the intersection with Route 159 and struck another vehicle head-on. After the first collision, the vehicle continued westbound in the eastbound lanes striking a second vehicle head-on. The vehicle continued onto the Lenscrafter’s parking lot, 10900 Lincoln Trail, where it came to rest after striking the building.

The driver of the westbound unit, who had no apparent injuries, was talking to officers but appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency and was subsequently transported by ambulance to a Belleville hospital. He is identified as JEFFREY A. SCOTT, a 65-year-old, Fairview Heights-man. Scott was later pronounced dead at the hospital from an apparent medical condition, which is what police believe caused the crash. The other drivers did not require medical attention.
