The Fairview Heights Police have recently added undercover officers to the St. Clair Square Mall, both on foot and in undercover police cars to help combat grab-and-run style thefts and to make sure shoppers and employees are safe and secure during this holiday’s shopping season.
Last night undercover officers were out in full-force and were able to capture a would-be thief as he was trying to escape from Dillard’s with stolen clothing. This was not just a thief who was out for his first time, this thief is suspected in at least five other grab-and-run thefts from various stores in the mall. He is suspected of stealing several thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise. In the previous thefts, the same getaway car was waiting outside, backed into a space for easy escape. Last night was no different. The same passenger car was waiting and fled from officers on I-64 westbound into Missouri after seeing the suspect being arrested.
The suspect is currently being held at the FHPD while detectives finish the investigation. His name will not be released until formal charges have been obtained.
Officers will continue their undercover work throughout the shopping season. Fair warning, thieves beware!
